WHAT DOES TEETH WHITENING INVOLVE?
Your Smile Tailor cosmetic dentist will be able to assess what type of tooth staining you have and which is the best treatment option for you.
There are 2 different types of tooth staining:-
Intrinsic Stains: These stains occur inside the tooth enamel. There are many causes of intrinsic staining including antibiotic use, thinning enamel (common in the aging process), genetics, and fluoride exposure.
Extrinsic Stains: These stains occur on the outside of your tooth resulting in discoloured enamel. Exposure to coffee, tea, some food colourings, and smoking can all contribute to this type of staining.
Many people have a combination of both types of staining and this is why it is recommended to visit a professional cosmetic dentist for an assessment of the best type of teeth whitening treatment for you.
Firstly our Smile Tailor cosmetic dentist will assess your teeth and the type of staining you have. The dentist will use either a special custom-made mouth guard or a rubber appliance and gauze to protect your gums, mouth, and tongue. Next, a hydrogen peroxide gel, (usually 15% to 35%) is painted onto your teeth. Then a UV light heats the gel which activates it to penetrate deep into the tooth enamel removing and lightening any stains. The whole process takes around an hour to 90 minutes and the results are immediately visible.
You can arrange an appointment during your lunch hour for amazing teeth-whitening results at Smile Tailor’s London Clinic.
You can purchase whitening products online but the concentration of the bleach solution is relatively weaker than that prescribed by a professional dentist. Furthermore, the ingredients of online whitening kits are not always precisely known. If you want safe and effective teeth whitening results, it really is worth spending a little more and visiting a qualified cosmetic dentist to prevent damage to your teeth or gums and/or unsatisfactory results.
Typically, professional teeth whitening by one of our highly-experienced cosmetic dentists is stronger than over-the-counter kits. Also, our award-winning dentists can give you a check-up and ensure there are no underlying problems before embarking on the teeth-whitening treatment.
Alternatively, if you would prefer to whiten your teeth at home our dentist can supply the kits and you can collect them from our London Clinic.
You will need to attend an appointment to have impressions of your teeth made. These digital impressions will be sent to the labs and customised teeth whitening trays will be made just for you. Our Smile Tailor cosmetic dentist will guide you through the at-home treatment process.
Teeth whitening kits bought online do not always fit the exact shape of the teeth and this can result in the bleaching gel leaking onto the gums and mouth causing damage. It is safer to visit a professional cosmetic dentist and take the time to ensure that you have a custom-made, effective teeth whitening kit.
IS TEETH WHITENING TREATMENT SAFE?
When performed or monitored by a professional cosmetic dentist, teeth whitening treatments are completely safe and effective.
Most problems, such as tooth sensitivity, sore gums, or chemical burns to the mouth or gums, arise from over-the-counter or online treatments that use non-customized trays allowing the gel to leak around the gum line and mouth.
